Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) offers PhD programs in several major fields of study in arts, science, education, and others. For admission to PhD program at TNOU, the candidate should have obtained post graduate/ M.Phil degree with not less than 55% of marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NC) from any University recognized by University Grants Commission. Extra documents needed are the application form, certified copies of educational certificates, certified copies of identity documents, proof of language proficiency, and a detailed PhD research proposal. A clear description of the proposed area and scope of study should be provided in the research proposal.
Following the application to the program, the candidates sit for an entrance examination which comprises of questions in the multiple-choice format assessing research disposition, and content knowledge, logical thinking, and numeracy skills. Applicants who make the shortlist are required to attend an interview session before a panel of independent selectors from the relevant fields. It is given according to the results of the entrance examination and an interview. After enrolling in the PhD program, scholars are required to complete certain courses and also file a progress report after every six months. It takes a maximum of 5 years for students to complete their PhD program at TNOU. The last phase includes the submission of the PhD thesis along with the public presentation and the viva-voce examination. Thus, the award of the PhD degree is contingent on the satisfactory assessment of the thesis.

1. Look at the university website or ad to see the PhD notification and make sure you are eligible for the program. This involves such elements as educational qualifications, entrance test requirements, and so on.
2. The PhD application form can be downloaded from the university website or it can be gotten from the university campus. Beware of the form and be very careful in filling it up.
3. The collection and the preparation of all the necessary documents to be attached with your PhD application should be done. The main points are the documents that you have to submit for your college application which are your previous degrees, experience certificates, research proposal etc.
4. Complete the application form correctly and its documents and the required fee and submit it along with them before the set deadline. Ensure that the research area you choose to work in corresponds with the specializations that are offered.
5. Appear for and pass any written tests and interviews which are a part of the Phd admission process. The selection is mostly based on the previous academic record, the relevant work experience, the research proposal quality and the performance in the admission tests/interviews.
6. If chosen, the process of admission formalities is completed by paying fees and submitting original documents within the set time. Wait for the confirmation of PhD registration/provisional admission from the university.
