ANNA University furnishes PhD programs across various branches of engineering and technology which are embedded within the main campus in Chennai and the satellites campus. The minimum requirement for admission to the PhD program is a Master's degree in the relevant field with a minimum of 55% aggregate. The Ph.D candidates must pass the examination of ANNA University which evaluates technical knowledge, research aptitude and communication skills. Following a shortlisting process, the applicants are interviewed by the Selection Committee, which consists of the faculty members from the college and the subject experts from outside.
The PhD candidates selected need to complete the mandatory coursework in their initial year of studies, which covers the research related methodology and the advanced engineering concepts. Doctoral candidates have to give seminars on their progress regularly, finish their research work under the supervision of a faculty supervisor, publish their papers in journals/conferences and finally defend their PhD thesis in a viva-voce examination conducted by a panel of examiners. The entire duration of PhD program will be about 4-6 years either on the side of initial coursework or thesis writing as per the university norms and regulations.
